Why is my Mac laptop keeps turning off when I take it off the power cord?
Posted on 17. Sep, 2009 by admin in Mac
Each time I take off my Mac power cord out the laptop it goes off within a few minutes. Does any one seem to know why this is happening? And if so how can I fix the problem?

Your battery is probably failing/or has failed. You’ll need to replace it.

Most likely the problem is that you have let your battery go dead completely this will cause the battery to fail. You should contact Apple or contact IT at a local organization.

It sounds like your battery is dead, I would take it to best buy to their geek squad, and ask their opinion, they wont charge you if you don’t have them do a full scan of your computer and are just asking a question. Also if it is your battery and you need to replace it, you can look for them on sites like ebay, criags list ect. instead of paying full price at a chain store

Your battery is shot and won’t hold a charge any more. How old is the computer? If it’s only a few months old you can probably get a replacement for free. More than that and you’re probably going to have to pay full price.
[Edit: Oh god no. Don't go to geek squad. They have no clue what to do with a Mac but will charge you an arm and a leg anyway. Take it on down to any Apple store and they'll help you out quick, easy, and free.]

This happened to my IBM laptop. The battery in the laptop is dead.
The computer will still work but in order to keep it working you need to plug in the cord and keep it there until your done. Because if your working and you take it off it’ll shut the computer down.

Same thing happened to me. Most likely, you need to replace your battery, but the problem may be that the computer isnt recognizing the battery any more, which is very bad, and you may need a new computer. Here’s how to tell:
Shut down the computer, and disconnect the power source. Flip the compuer up side down, and use a coin to get the battery out. Now, reconnect the power source. Start up the Mac. Once everything started up, close the lid as if to put it to sleep.
Look at the little LCD light on the right bottom half, near the track pad. If the light is pulsing, its the battery’s fault. if the light stays continuously on, its the computer’s fault. Ideally, you are still under warentee, and Apple will replace it free.

You forgot to mention which Mac laptop, and how old it is, how old the battery is. If the battery has been discharged-charged more than 500 times (figure it out if you can), it may be shot. If not, follow these steps.
Reset the PMU following the appropriate article below. After that, charge the battery to the full 99-100 percent level. Then use the laptop without the power cord until the level goes down to 7% or less and you see a warning message about low power. Charge it again to full level but don’t keep it charging for hours after it reaches full level. Instead, unplug the power cord again and let it run down fully again. Repeat this for 4-5 cycles.
If you use the laptop where A.C. power is available for a full day or more, first run on battery only until it goes down to 30-50 % level. Plug in the power cord and remove the battery. Run on the power cord only to save the battery life. The battery will not last as long if it is kept at near full charge. It stores best at about 40% level.
