I have a few but I love my Nikon D40; the price is great, it’s small and light for a DSLR and, takes great photographs.

There are film (some technophobes call them analog) and digital cameras.

There’s nothing more or less professional about film or digital. It’s just a personal (or financial) choice everyone has to make for themselves. I used film and love the pictures I got from it, but I believe my digital pictures are every bit as good.

Digital sensors reproduce pictures more like slide/transparency film than print/negative film. If you’ve never shot slides, it can be a more difficult adjustment for many.

The only type of picture that film is significantly better/different than digital is black white. BW film is made with silver chunks that give a unique look that is very difficult for digital to reproduce.

If you want the closest to film look, you’ll need a D-SLR with a CMOS sensor (all the new Nikons, D5000 and above as well as Canon most Sonys).

The biggest advantages for digital are 1) less wasted materials chemicals and 2)easily switching light sensitivities (ISO) for bright dark.

I use a Nikon D300 and love it.

I just got back from a weeklong vacation, with over 1000 photos on this camera (having just gotten the camera a few days before the vacation). I would not say that any of the bad photos were because of the camera. Quite the opposite, I think it rescued some that would not have been very good on my older camera.

SLR are professional grade film cameras.

You can add color and warmth into digital photos if they seem washed out with software like photoshop or something free like Gimp.

I have a Canon digital Elph camera with 3X optical zoom. It’s lasted me a long time and takes amazing photos. Be sure to get one with anti-blur. That will mess up more photos than anything else.

Most of the point and shoot digital cameras out there will be more than enough Megapixels (8-10+).
